Vignette Photo Series
Photo Series Narrative :
This photo essay is depicting the aging parts of town becoming abandoned and unused as newer things take its place. My series was taken on a trek throughout the nearby towns of Dighton and Somerset, taking particular notice at the rusting and decrepit structures there. My inspiration for this series was to make a kind of tribute to nostalgic places throughout Somerset. I'm trying to portray the idea that the old must move out of the way to make room for the new. I did this through having the rusting and old structures at the beginning of the series and ending it with the highway sign and and the towers which hint at the future through technology and travel. I unified the photos by adding a warming filter over the images and adding a vignette. I chose vignetting as a way to visually show the past in a "flashback" like way as well as show the future like a "flash-forward". I think the vine on the fence photo is the strongest because the composition is strong with the shallow depth of field and leading lines. There is a definite foreground and background in the photo. Throughout the photos there was strong light: it was a bright, sunny day, Some of the pictures were taken in the golden hour during sunset. The Magoni's and the power lines pictures were taken at a low viewpoint and angled. I created a warm tone in the series and added vignettes to unify the images.
